DATA PROTECTION
BACKUP & RECOVERY

Two terminologies which seem to reflect the same outcome, yet there are subtle differences. In 2019, SEM Rush (an online marketing service) noted that the word ‘backup’ was searched worldwide, more than 49,000 times a day.

Backup solutions have been available for decades and yet continues to be a major issue for many individuals and organisations. The evolution towards data protection is gaining traction (aside from thinking of GDPR) and whilst they are similar, they are not the same.

Solarwinds, a leading IT management software organisation produced an article that helped to identify the differences;

  • Backup is traditionally an operational function
Making sure a server or device is regularly backed up is a basic part of good operational management. Sometimes budget responsibility for backup lies with the server team, and sometimes with the storage team, since backups traditionally consumed a lot of storage.
  • Data protection is a security function
This mindset considers data a valuable corporate asset to be protected—from viruses, ransomware, user error, fire, and flood. An important part of that protection is having the ability to recover when all else fails. When the virus gets through, or the hardware fails, you need to be able to recover.

BACKUP & RECOVERY

Backup & Recovery

Backup and recovery refers to the process of data creation and storage copies to protect an entity from losing data if it is accidentally deleted, compromised or corrupted. This is often referred to as operational recovery.

Disaster Recovery

Many organisations still have no DR strategy or understand how much data could be afforded to be lost lose due to a systems failure (RPO) or the time it could take be back up and running after a failure (RTO).

Cloud Backup

Cloud backup, also known as online backup or remote backup, is a strategy for sending a copy of a physical or virtual file or database to a secondary, off-site location for preservation in case of equipment failure or catastrophe.

Business Continuity

Business continuity is about having a plan to deal with difficult situations, so your organisation can continue to function with as little disruption as possible. It’s not just about data, but people, comms and more.

RTO stands for Recovery Time Objective. It’s a metric that helps to calculate how quickly you need to recover your IT infrastructure and services following a disaster in order to maintain business continuity.

RTO is measured in terms of how long your business can survive following a disaster before operations are restored to normal. If your RTO is twenty-four hours, it means you’ve determined that the business can maintain operations for that amount of time without having its normal data and infrastructure available. If data and infrastructure are not recovered within twenty-four hours, the business could suffer irreparable harm.

RPO, or Recovery Point Objective, is a measurement of the maximum tolerable amount of data to lose. It also helps to measure how much time can occur between your last data backup and a disaster without causing serious damage to your business. RPO is useful for determining how often to perform data backups.

RPO is significant because in most cases, you will likely lose some data when a disaster occurs. Even data that is backed up in real-time has a risk of some data loss. Most businesses back up data at fixed intervals of time — once every hour, once every day, or perhaps as infrequently as once every week. The RPO measures how much data you can afford to lose as the result of a disaster.
